Residency Oportunity: Project M at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts

"This September, twelve artist participants from The Color Network’s mentorship program will gather in person for a two-and-a-half-week residency at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts’ newly renovated 54-acre campus in Edgecomb, Maine. Watershed and The Color Network (TCN) are partnering for a third time to host an artist residency focused on mentor-mentee relationship building among artists of color who work in clay.  The session will be funded in part by a $35,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)."*

ELIGIBILITY

Any artist who has signed up for the TCN Mentorship program (as a mentor or mentee) by the time their residency application is submitted is eligible to apply, whether or not you have yet been paired with a mentor. Applicants may apply as individuals or mentor-mentee pairs. Applications will be prioritized as follows: Mentor-mentee pairs, Individual Mentors, and Individual Mentees. Priority will be given to applicants who have not yet had the opportunity to participate in a prior TCN + Watershed mentor-mentee residency. 

Artists must be comfortable working independently in a clay studio. Formal instruction is not provided at Watershed.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION

Application is free. Residency fees are covered and each participant will receive a firing allowance. A travel stipend up to $500 USD per person will be provided.

Applications will remain open beginning Saturday, March 30 and will close Tuesday, April 30 at 11:59pm EST. Late applications will not be considered.

11 applicants will be accepted.

The residency will take place at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts from September 4-20, 2024.

TCN Fellowship at Arrowmont

The Color Network is pleased to offer eight fellowships to fund workshops at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts! The fellowship will cover room, board, tuition for one workshop, and includes a $300 travel and material stipend.

This opportunity is focused for artists of color working in all artistic disciplines. Artists 18 years of age and older, at any stage of their careers, may apply.

The Color Network offers $2500 Grants!

The Color Network is pleased to announce the availability of two (2) grants at $2500* for artists of color working in ceramics. TCN requests grant proposals for projects including, but not limited to: material/equipment purchases, shipping costs, travel for ceramic-engaged events, or expenses for curatorial initiatives. To apply, send the following information in ONE PDF with the subject line “TCN Grant” to thecolornetwork.org@gmail.com:

  • 500 word proposal (including name, address, email, and website if applicable; Explain what you would do with this grant, and how will it impact your career development)

  • Budget (breakdown of how the funds would be used)

  • 5 images (.jpg, .jpeg MAX 1MB)

FUNDING AMOUNT: The Color Network will award 2  grants in the amount of $2500.  

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY: ceramic artists of color at all stages of career (emerging, mid-career, established). Currently enrolled students are NOT eligible for this grant. Recipients must submit a W9 to receive funds.

PROJECT ELIGIBILITY: Eligible expenses include but are not limited to, Audio-visual equipment, Technological equipment, Costs associated with continuing education, Artist stipend (include supporting documentation that demonstrates this need; for example, invitation letter from a residency).

Ineligible expenses include: Tuition fees.

FINAL REPORT: Awardees will be required to submit a final report. 


ASSESSMENT CRITERIA: Applications will be evaluated by a selection committee. The jurors will consider the clarity of the project proposal and budget as well as the potential impact of this grant.

Open Call: TCN + College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University Exhibition

We’re excited to announce that The Color Network is working with CSB/SJU on an exhibition called Muliebris, which explores ideas around femininity.


DESCRIPTION: The Color Network seeks proposals for ceramic artwork to be exhibited at CSB/SJU in St. Joseph, MN in spring 2023. Titled Muliebris, the Latin word for woman, effeminate, feminine, TCN invites artists to submit work that speaks to expansive definitions of femininity. The feminine can be interpreted in many ways: from personal introspection to social constructs, from the casual to the academic. TCN hopes to curate an exhibition that considers intersectional viewpoints and resonant artwork for this topic.

This call is for artists who identify as Artists of Color. No fee to apply, and all shipping costs up to $300 USD will be reimbursed to the artists who can provide a W9.

Residency Scholarship Opportunity: Zenobia Awards at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts

“Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts offers Summer Residency scholarship awards to support artists interested in joining a session. The Zenobia Award was founded in 2017 by artist Simone Leigh @simoneyvetteleigh to provide a full scholarship to an artist of color annually. The Zenobia Award Fund has grown, thanks to the generosity of a large donor community, enabling Watershed to offer four Zenobia Awards in 2022. The only prerequisite to apply is that artists must be comfortable working independently in a ceramics studio.”

In Full Color Scholarship at Farmhouse Pottery

Farmhouse Pottery, located in Woodstock, Vermont, specializes in wheel thrown pottery and handmade goods. Their In Full Color Scholarship aims to invest in future generations of artists of color through awarding a $5,000 scholarship to a BIPOC ceramicist, in addition to a paid summer internship position at their workshop.

Deadline for application materials, including cover letter, portfolio, and transcripts, is January 7, 2022 (sent via email to info@farmhousepottery.com). Winner will be announced January 21, 2022 with scholarship funds covering tuition costs for Spring 2022.

Scholarships: Equity Awards to "Present Tense: 2019" Conference

The American Craft Council (ACC) offers 20 Equity Awards that allow for full participation in “Present Tense: 2019,” a national conference on craft’s relevance as a powerful catalyst for navigating and making meaning in an increasingly tense and complex present. Speakers and participants from a range of sectors and disciplines will gather in Philadelphia for three days to explore, challenge, and celebrate craft’s impact in American life today.

The Equity Awards are open to anyone who is attempting to cultivate a relationship with craft and has has not attended an ACC conference before. We encourage applications from people of color and others who have been historically underrepresented in the field, including individuals with Black, Latinx, Asian, or Native American ancestry, and people who identify as LGBTQIA. Formal training or an academic background are not required.

Cannupa Hanska Luger wins Burke Prize

Cannupa Hanska Luger is a New Mexico-based, multi-disciplinary artist. Raised on the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, he is of Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Lakota, Austrian, and Norwegian descent. Using social collaboration and in response to timely and site-specific issues, Luger produces multi-pronged projects that take many forms.
